When trying to sketch a motif as a beginner, you are overwhelmed by the details and the amount of information. Details and information, which you are not noticing, when you don't try to sketch. You don't see them, when you are not sketching, because a lot of processes in your brain interpret what you see, without that you are being aware of it. They are analysing and correcting the perspective contractions, lightening up shadows, giving you information about he position of the objects you are seeing, calculating out the tension of your lenses and the differences between the two different pictures of your eyes. You remember the experiences, you have made with objects like the ones, you are seeing, experiences like structure, weight, temperature etc. and other physical properties… All this processes help you to move and orientate in a complex environment, but on the other hand they prevent, that you just can sketch the picture, which is projected onto your retina. Because this picture on your retina is analysed and changed on the way from your eye into your head.
The trick is, that when you are sketching or drawing you have stop this unconsious processes and to behave like being stupid. As stupid as a camera - a paralysed, staring eye, which can only focus one spot of the motive.
The following strategies are methods to break up the “sense” of a motif. When sketching an arm, you should not see an arm, you should see a trapez – that’s all. When seeing an forearm, you know, it is at about 25 cm long. Therefore you cannot draw it. Because you don`t "see" the trapez – you perceive an arm and you are correcting the perspective contractions, you do't see them any more. Here is a list of strategies you can use to apprehend your motif. These strategies are very old, fruits of the operational experience of hundreds of years.
These strategies are no recipes, you always should keep a certain distance to the methods. Always keep §1 in your mind! And you should draw playfully. Sketching should be pleasure, so keep cool and just draw :-)
